Adolescence And Same Sex Attraction
| Adolescence is an important period in the development in human beings. This is the period when teenagers get to know the basics of sex. Attraction towards opposite sex is quite common and is called a heterosexual behavior. |
However, around 10 percent of boys and girls develop an attraction towards individuals of same sex, often known as a homosexual behavior.
Same sex attraction builds up in adolescents either due to gender identity disorder that forms during childhood or due to environmental factors. Another reason that is most prominently told is the influence of genes. However, research has proven that there is only a 20 percent chance of an identical twin developing same sex attraction.
Developmental processes are worst affected in adolescents with same sex attraction as this stage becomes the most confusing part of their life. They would be unable to reveal their sexual attraction due to various social stigmas associated with this sort of behavior.
“Coming out” in the open and discussing their problem is not a solution for adolescents. This is primarily because research has proven that same sex attraction in adolescents in not a stable condition. Studies have shown that people experiencing this behavior during adolescence find the attraction disappearing by the time they reached 25. Apart from this, there are certain other potential risks involved with adolescents partnering with same sex individuals. These persons are at an extremely increased risk of getting affected with drug and alcohol abuse. Incidence of HIV/AIDS and other STDs is also higher in these individuals. The most suggested way to get out of this situation is to have psychological or spiritual therapy.
